It has a bit of a learning curve to set up but you can install it on any number of hardware configurations and set various services (SMB, AFP etc…) as needed. FreeNAS v0.7.x is based on FreeBSD which is a fairly foreign OS to me. Have you checked out FreeNAS ( http://freenas.org )? While it's easy to setup initially, debugging is a chore. :confused: Now just need to start learning how to use freeNAS so I can get my media library up and running! Having a setup like a data center including VMware vSpehre 4 (ESXi 4) server, NAS (Network Access Storage), iSCSI disks on your home PC is wonderful way for learning. So that if a drive fails I can pop in a new one and all be .. I would also be a good learning experience for ZFS. My ultimate aim would be to have the one server with 4 or 5 physical disks with ESXi booting from flash disk, and FreeNAS installed as a VM with ZFS volume/s that ESXi can use for VMs and also use the ZFS volume/s for network file shares for Windows and Linux. Everything, I mean everything, that I do in that OS is a complete and total learning experience. I think FreeNAS could be the answer to all my dreams, but I'm finding the learning curve is pretty steep. Are there features in 8 that I will miss if I go with 7 given my goals? Creating iSCSI disks in FreeNAS 0.8 with VirtualBox and VMware will be interested and useful for learning purpose. 0:1 , so far seems to be working ok? Am I better off going with FreeNAS 7 to make sure I can replace a drive successfully later on?
